Game 036 [Action/Voice] - Once More With Feeling

[ If you happen to be celebrating the new year with some coffee or pastries or... whatever else Hanekoma feeds people at Kat's Kradle, then you might hear the sound of someone tuning a violin coming from the second story.

It starts off quite out of tune, but within a minute or two, it sounds fine. Then, Joshua starts up a piece of music: fast-paced, somewhat frantic, somewhat chaotic, without chorus or verse, but it has an overall feel to it of life, of progress, of change.

Or maybe you just missed the whole performance.

Either way, a little later, the following goes out over the journal. ]

Why do you want to go home? [ And then, after a short pause, ]

Why do you want to stay?

[Good, 'cause Neku is too intrigued to leave anyway. He leans up against one of the walls there next to Joshua's door, just continuing to listen. He just wishes he could figure out why it sounds so familiar.]

[ If he can't figure it out, he'll have to ask. The music continues, and the notes are just a hint less pure, the vibrato a little more unstable... his emotion bleeds through, but only if you're listening for it. The nostalgia that pains him so much that whenever he just stops and takes the time to think about it, he can barely breathe. Hurt and longing like he's never known before, and he's only agitating a wound but it's a comfort at the same time. ]

[Maybe he'll figure it out, but either way he's still going to ask Joshua about it once he's done playing. Right now Neku doesn't want to interrupt.]

[ Well, then, we'll be here for a while, dude. Shibuya is a large, complicated city, and Joshua could play for days and still only scratch the surface. ]

[fff WELL IN THAT CASE. Neku listens in for a little while longer, but eventually he'll go ahead and knock on the door. Geeze dude you never stop.]

[ Joshua plays on for another couple seconds, then suddenly the music fades out. ]

Yes?

...er, can I come in?

The door isn't locked and you have hands capable of opening it, I'd assume. [ He giggles lightly. ]

[Pffft. Neku goes ahead and opens the door then and takes a hesitant step inside. You don't have this place booby trapped too, do you?]

I didn't want to be rude and just barge in.

[ Did you see that kitten? Did you see that kitten distinctly not trapped and immobile in Joshua's (new) room? There we go. ]

That's what knocking is generally for. [ He lowers the violin from his shoulder to let it rest on his lap gently. The case lies open by his feet. ]

[Okay that's a good sign, then.]

So it was a violin.

Apparently so. I wouldn't have thought that they would be able to get a hold of one in such good condition. [ Is that nostalgia in Joshua's voice? Never. ]

I would have pegged you for a piano person.

Oh, I can play that, too. [ And flute, and guitar, and shamisen, and koto, and... ] I'd imagine it would be much trickier to get that one up the steps.

Probably. Uh... but about that music you were just playing.

Hmm? What about it?

Was it Shibuya's music?

[Because it wasn't anything like he's heard before and it was way too familiar sounding.]

... You still know her.

I wasn't sure, but yeah.

It pales in comparison to the real thing, but it's nice to hear even a little again. Should I thank them for that? [ He giggles softly ]
