Let's have a thought experiment. Say you were dying, and the only possible way to save yourself is to get help from someone very close to you. However, you don't know for sure that this help will indeed save you, and whether or not it does, there's a chance that it will damage the one helping you. Trying to help you might even kill them.

Do you ask for their help anyway? Would you accept their help if they offered it?

It would depend on who was involved. Some of those close to me I value more than myself. Others, I do not.

Do you only think people are worth saving if they're important to you?

I do not see valuing someone and someone being important to me as the same thing, though such a distinction might be hard for someone else to imagine.

What's the difference to you?

I am an individual, and therefore I have those I hold important to me and those who I do not. But regardless of how I feel about them, some people have the ability to do more good for the world than others, and those are the ones who should be valued.

That makes sense, although you did say that the ones you value most are close to you. But I guess if that's different too, then would you save someone who's better for the world instead of someone you need in your life?

In the end, there's no one I need. Merely those I would like to keep around me.
